GLASS
BEACH IN CALIFORNIA
The Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California, is also
called Mermaid Tears, Lucky Glass, Ocean Glass and Sea Gems. Today, it is
filled with rounded bits of sea glass. They glisten in the sun like little
marbles. Fort Bragg has become a popular tourist destination in California
because of this beautiful and unique Glass Beach. The sea glass on the beach
was created from years of dumping garbage into an area of coastline near the
northern part of the town. People used to dump their old trash (cars, bottles,
cans, tires, etc…) on this beach and finally someone woke up and realized what
a mess it was. Several major cleanups later, this beautiful cove covered in smoothed
and polished glass is what`s left behind.
Similar to this one, there is also a Glass Beach in
Hanapepe, Hawaii, in an industrial area that is made of sea glass. It is in
Hanapepe Bay, near Port Allen Harbour. The beach`s regular rock is basalt, but
the sea glass formed after years of discarded glass.
